There is a rapidly growing interest of colleges and universities across the U.S. to offer some form of competency-based education (CBE) or digital badging. From internships to traditional classes, to entire baccalaureate degrees, digital credentials continues to attract a lot of attention. Many institutions, however, struggle to reconcile the traditional degree with badging and CBE offerings. Colleges and universities find themselves in an unclear landscape of institutional change and needing to reconcile higher education tradition with what a 21st century degree looks like. In this session two institutions will share how they navigated the complexities of balancing the traditional academy with digital badging and CBE efforts. They will also discuss how they have managed institutional change in order to develop, offer and refine viable digital badge and CBE programs and degrees.
